Airing on ESPN in February and March is one of the most prestigious tournaments in rugby union competition, the Six Nations Championship. Airing annually, the Six Nations is contested by some of the biggest powers in world rugby: England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. The tension is high and the action non-stop as teams play each other once with home-field advantage alternating from one year to the next. The winner is considered the European champion, marking them as one of the sport’s most accomplished competitors.
Last season saw France defeat an old enemy, England, in the last game to clinch a coveted Grand Slam, earned by beating all the other teams. France entered the tournament on fire, having beaten the famed All Blacks in New Zealand (hosts of the 2011 World Cup) and the reigning champions, South Africa. Since 2000 when Italy joined the field, France has won the top prize five times, England three times, Wales twice and Ireland once.
